Can strawberry-picking robots help overcome labour shortages?

The Guardian runs an article today focusing on growing shortages of labour in the UK fruit-picking industry. Will robotics help resolve the paucity of people willing to collect fruit? Or is the up-front cost too much to make investment in robotics commercially viable given the vagaries of the weather?
