Is globalisation now in reverse? [Year 13 Enrichment Task]
7th May 2020
This week's Enrichment Task for Year 13 students was inspired by a BBC radio programme on Monday morning. In 'Start the Week', journalist Andrew Marr explored the history of globalisation (which goes rather further than the last 30-40 years that we tend to explore in the A level syllabus), and whether the current pandemic has exposed the fragility of global supply chains, dealing a fatal blow to the process of global interdependence.
There are arguments that globalisation was already somewhat in decline, with the US-China trade wars being an example of rising trade barriers.
So the question for students to research is whether globalisation is now in reverse, or will be changed but not reduced, in the future.
