Recent surveys have shown that, on average, 3 children in a typical class suffer from some sort of mental health problem (although many never report it because of fear of stigma), and that over 60% of teenagers have carried out recent internet searches on depression. The government has pledged £1.25bn for youth mental health services over the next 5 years, but parents and schools also have a role to play. Another recent survey, reported here by the BBC, showed that 55% of parents had never talked about mental health issues with their children, with 20% of those saying that they had no idea how to start a conversation on the topic.
