The dark side of the family is often overlooked by the main sociological theories. This side of the family addresses internal issues within the unit, such as domestic violence and abuse (sexual, physical and emotional). It is predicted that domestic violence will affect 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men in their lifetime. This can lead to on average two women a week and 30 men per a year being murdered by their abuser. Shelter (2002) quoted that domestic violence was one of the most common reasons for homelessness.
