Gene-edited babies

Sarah Best

13th December 2018

A story broke recently about a Chinese scientist who claims to have created the first genetically edited babies.

The scientist He Jiankui claimed that he had altered the genes of twin baby girls so that they would not contract HIV. The twin girls have been born and will be monitored as they grow up.

He Jiankui has been widely condemned by scientists around the world, if in part as gene-editing is still experimental in nature.

The article could be used for the topics Global Development and Health.
