Tutor2u Economics Update Magazine - Autumn 2023 Competition Round Up

8th March 2024

The tutor2u Economics team was blown by the quantity and quality of the entries received to our Autumn 2023 magazine competition. The judges enjoyed the broad range of topics covered by students and the variety of approaches taken to the prompt of 'the most important economic problem'. Year 13 students were also asked to consider a possible solution to their problem.

Year 12 summary

Our overall winner in this category was Matilda Jones from St Joseph's, Ipswich, who wrote a thoughtful and imaginative piece about the economic and social challenges relating to mental health. Our runner-up was Sophie Fraser, from Newcastle Sixth Form College, who focused her attention on teacher shortages.

Because of the sheer number of entries, we felt that we had no choice but to also award 5 Highly Commended places. Huge congratulations go to:

  • Asya Ates, from Brockenhurst College, for her piece on "The problems of working too much"
  • Bernardo Bercik, from The British School in the Netherlands, for his piece on "The growing shadow economy"
  • Tobias Hayre-Clear, from Claremont Fan Court School, for his piece on "Water Scarcity"
  • Ronnie Foster, from The Appleton School, for writing about "The nature of the economic problem"
  • Haoyu Wang, from St Peter's, York, for a piece on "Global Income Inequality"

Year 13 summary

Our overall winner in this category was Natalie Cooper from George Watson's College, who wrote a well-researched and articulated essay on why we need to nationalise energy firms. Our runner-up was Thomas Price from Brockenhurst College, who wrote about wealth inequality in developing economies.

A huge well done to all who entered! Sadly, we cannot reply to every student who took the time to enter. We look forward to receiving entries to our next competition, which will appear in the soon-to-be-published next edition of our Economics Update magazine.
