Identify is more than one thing...
When looking at identity, it’s important to remember that individuals are not one type in isolation. This is often something overlooked by students when learning the culture and identity unit. The terms ethnicity and gender bring lots of nuances, which require close examination. This BBC clip highlights how breaking down traditions and stereotypes associated with the role of Indian women raised with such norm and values, are fighting back at the assumptions and traditions which they believe a patriarchal government is trying to reinforce.
For an extra twist, teachers could explore not just gender and ethnicity, but the role of being a part of a millennial generation and this may be a turning point in Indian culture?
