Gender Pay Gap at the BBC
20th July 2017
Releasing the names of the BBC's best-paid employees tells us a lot about the TV labour market although the information did not include those working for independent production companies.
One of the salient features of the data was the clear gender pay gap between presenters. Around two thirds of the top 100 salary earners at the BBC are men. Chris Evans is the BBC's best-paid star. He made between £2.2m and £2.25m in 2016/2017, while Claudia Winkleman is the highest-paid female celebrity, earning between £450,000 and £500,000.
Perhaps the publication of this earnings data will act as a catalyst for change in improving opportunities and pay for female presenters in the years to come.
Private sector firms are now required to report their gender pay gap if they employ more than 250 people.
As so often, Matt at the Telegraph gets it spot on!
