Getting started with US politics - Who Said What?
5th September 2016
What a great year for studying US politics with a presidential election looming! A great way of engaging students from the word GO is to get them to closely examine some of the things said by the two main party candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. This blog post includes a selection of key quotes from both of these two hopefuls. The student task in the first instance is to decide "who said what"! The teacher should read them out, and students discuss/reason why they think it might be Clinton or Trump.
"On the campaign trail" quotes
- "The system, folks, is rigged. It’s a rigged, disgusting dirty system. It’s a dirty system and only a non-politician would say it." [Trump]
- "Be careful, Lyin’ Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife!” [Trump]
- “You may have seen I recently launched a Snapchat account. I love it. I love it. Those messages disappear all by themselves.” [Clinton]
- “I have the most loyal people, did you ever see that? I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot people and I wouldn’t lose voters.” [Trump]
- “I’ve been eating a lot of hot sauce. Raw peppers and hot sauce. Because I think it keeps my immune system strong.” [Clinton]

- “I have actually—believe it or not, I have a lot of friends that are Muslim...In most cases, they’re very rich Muslims, OK?...They’ll come in. And you’ll have exceptions.” [Trump]

- "My hair look okay? Give me a little spray.” [Trump]
