Bombing Syria - free votes

30th November 2015

The Tories have reportedly spent the weekend scrabbling around trying to persuade enough Opposition MPs to back them in a Commons vote on whether the UK should engage in bombing Syria, following David Cameron's attempt on Thursday to persuade MPs that this was the right course of action. Jeremy Corbyn is openly against bombing, and indeed has written to his MPs to outline his view. Mr Corbyn is still undecided whether to offer his MPs a free vote (or "vote of conscience") or whether to make this a whipping issue (i.e. tell them how to vote). Mr Corbyn's views are at odds with a good portion of his Shadow Cabinet, which is meeting today to try and prevent the party from splitting into factions on the issue.
