Beyond the Bike - conflict minerals and Africa

What causes civil war? There are many theories, but at the heart of many recent African conflicts has been the devastating search for minerals to fuel our purchases of electronic gizmos and our love of diamond bling. This week on their Beyond the Bike journey, Stuart and Claire ventured into the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the assistance of a small social enterprise based in Amsterdam - Fairphone - to explore the start of the supply chain for many of the minerals essential for the production of smartphones, so-called conflict minerals.
