A different slant on the significance of elections 2021

A very interesting article by Martin Kettle on the outcome of last week's elections

Most of the press coverage of the recent elections focused on what a disaster it was for Labour, and often some speculation about the future of the party leader, Keir Starmer. But a recent article in the Guardian presents a quite different thesis. The piece can be found here:

https://www.theguardian.com/co...

Here are some questions to consider when reading it.

  • What evidence was there of an incumbency effect?
  • How do the local election results nationally compare to those held in 2017?
  • Did Brexit's absence at the 2021 poll have any significance?
  • What are the implications of the results for the Conservatives under Boris Johnson?

And, overall, a more general question: do you agree with the writer's assessment of the election?
