Ebola outbreak causes border closure between Rwanda and DRC.
5th August 2019
Recent outbreaks and two deaths in the Congolese border city of Goma led to the temporary closure of the border.
Whilst the closure of the border only lasted for a day, it had a huge impact on both countries. Goma is a border town with over 2 million people living in it and acts as a transit hub for access to east Africa. With hundreds of people crossing the border here daily, the temporary closure led to panic for many people. It also led to increased food prices in other border towns.
The WHO has advised any country affected by Ebola not to panic and close borders as this won't necessarily restrict the spread as it will also stop aid agencies for responding to the needs of people and could worsen those who have contracted the disease.
