A work visa is a legal authorisation granted by a government that permits a foreign national to live and work within its borders, usually tied to a specific employer, skill level, or time period.

In the UK, work visas are crucial for alleviating structural labour shortages. They allow firms in high-demand sectors, such as healthcare, engineering, and IT, to recruit internationally when domestic supply falls short. By expanding the labour force, work visas boost the economy's productive capacity (shifting Long-Run Aggregate Supply outwards), mitigate the effects of an aging population, and help maintain competitiveness by attracting specialised talent.
