Last updated 16 Mar 2023
Here's a really quick starter/plenary Powerpoint teaching activity using data relating to the ONS calculation of inflation.
Students have to categorise the 8 items on screen into either 'added', 'removed' or 'retained' products/services for the 'basket of goods' used by the ONS (data taken from March 2023).
The activity can be used to stimulate discussion on which items are used in the basket, why they might be added or removed, the significance of weightings in the inflation calculation and the use of several metrics (CPI, CPIH or RPI). The full list of goods used in the basket of goods can also be found from this ONS data set.
