What the company of the future might look like

Geoff Riley

24th September 2019

The Big Read in the Financial Times today is a superb piece by Andrew Hill on the limits of the pursuit of profit. In this very accessible and clear video, he talks through some of the main themes of his article.

The trigger for his writing seems to be the August 2019 declaration from the Business Roundtable that corporations should share a fundamental commitment to all of our stakeholders (employees, customers, suppliers, the wider community) rather than a narrow focus on the financial interests of shareholders. How many companies are shifting towards a broader range of societal goals - widely known as the purpose motive? The Triple Bottom Line (people, planet and profit) gets a handy mention!
