Allianz considers £5bn AA takeover as both firms eye growth and greater scale

Allianz is circling the AA with a potential £5bn takeover, giving the German insurer a route into the AA’s 16 million-strong customer base. The deal could create economies of scale and synergies by combining Allianz’s insurance operations with the AA’s roadside recovery and insurance businesses. For the AA’s private-equity owners, however, it is a chance to cash in after a transformation that has boosted profits and reduced debt. With another bidder lurking—and a potential stock-market flotation still on the table—the AA has rather more than a breakdown to worry about.
