Water industry - Profits surge even as leaks and spills wash away public trust

Graham Watson

28th November 2021

The financial results of water company, Pennon are announced next week, and the Observer uses this to make a case for re-nationalisation of the sector, arguing that the structure of the industry is such that it has created regional monopolies guaranteed supernormal profits.

As a result, it is argued that the firms are more interested in generating shareholders than serving consumers, not least in relation to their treatment of sewage.

@SouthernWater⁩ was fined £90m for deliberately dumping raw sewage into protected seas for financial gain.
