Is Technology more about Profits than People?
20th September 2016
I'm not sure I agree with this Guardian article: it advocates the introduction of barriers to entry and tighter regulation of internet-based companies, such as Airbnb and Uber. However, despite the claims that the existence of the former has driven up rents and the latter has imperilled passengers there's little in the way of concrete evidence to support either case.
And consider this sort of sentence: "Uber, like other algorithm-driven firms, should be asked to reveal such practices", which refers to an aspect of 'surge' pricing? What? Seriously?
Do we ask traditional retailers to explain every aspect of their pricing policy in such detail. Heaven forbid: if Uber are forced to do it, then so should second-hand car dealers. "They paid more, because they were mugs, m'lud".
