The Economics team at tutor2u are delighted to announce the winners of our latest student competition!

Students were asked to consider “How well has the new government done in addressing the UK’s economic problems and what should they do next?”. They could respond in any way that they liked. It could have been an essay, a cartoon, a video, an interview – anything at all that conveys a powerful and convincing story!

The overall winner of the competition was Kaiden from Reading Blue Coat School. Kaiden took a formal approach to the brief, producing a well-researched academic essay that carefully picked out key issues facing the UK economy and then analysed the government’s response. The essay demonstrated an excellent grasp of current issues within a historical context, and made good use of real-world evidence. Well done, Kaiden!

The runner up was a brilliantly artistic entry from Harini of Kimberly Sixth Form College. We loved the comic strip and the Costzilla character which now has pride of place on the tutor2u office walls!

Our three highly commended entries came from:

• Bella and Anoushka, who included some super infographics along with their jointly-written piece - the vitality of the graphics persuaded us to award a prize!
• Sophie, from Barnard Castle School, who wrote a fantastic essay on improving productivity, tackling stagnant living standards, and dealing with persistent regional inequality. Not only did she present sound policies, but also gave careful critiques supported by empirical evidence.
• Jaden from JFS, who sent us a thought-provoking entry investigating the feasibility of introducing policies such as military service for immigrants, legalisation with strong government control of some drugs, and altering the national insurance system such that it more closely resembled Norway’s sovereign wealth fund.
