Significant progress has been made over the last two decades in lowering extreme poverty but bigger challenges remain to make development more sustainable and inclusive. The World Bank is now focusing more heavily on policies designed to enhance the capability of national governments to provide essential public services and create the conditions for the private sector to thrive.
