Improving Productivity Through Training & Lean Production - the Unipart Way

The principles of lean manufacturing and on-the-job employee training have been combined by logistics group Unipart as a core part of its strategy to improve productivity.

Unipart has created what it calls the "Faculty on the Shop Floor" - a fascinating on-the-job training programme which takes employees directly from the shop floor to solve problems which they then take straight back to their workplace.

Put simply, Unipart is trying to achieve higher productivity by bringing its people together to solve problems. It seems to be working for Unipart - so why is it not followed by other UK firms?

The CEO of Unipart says the answer to this question is resistance to change. The need for improved productivity in order to remain competitive is widespread amongst UK firms.

In Lewin's Force Field Analysis model, this need is a key force for change. Can other firms overcome resistance to change by adopting the Unipart way?
