Why Some Competition in the Rail Sector Would be a Good Thing

A brilliant article in today's Guardian flags up the possibility of admitting more competition on one of the most profitable parts of Britain's rail network, the East Coast mainline. The current franchise holder, Virgin Trains, with Virgin often the source of competition and creative destruction in a market, might soon face a rival, from either First Group or Alliance Rail Holdings, who are hoping to revive the GNER brand.
