Protestant Ethic

The Protestant Ethic was a book published by Weber examining how industrial capitalism occurred within Europe and the USA. He mainly identified that for capitalism to flourish the right economic conditions need to be present which Calvinism encouraged. Calvinism was a type of Protestantism which focused on several components such as predestination, ascetic lifestyle and working hard. These components developed the spirit of capitalism as it encouraged the followers to work hard and spend little money but then only use it to reinvest in their businesses which enabled them to grow and become more successful. Ultimately, religion acted as a force for change by making society move away from a feudal society into an industrialised capitalist society.
