Domestic Abuse: Precursor to Mass Violence

Adam Walton

2nd November 2017

ATTN, has released a phenomenal article outlining that individuals that are abusive have generally gone on to commit mass violence crimes. This article highlights the Pulse Night Club shooter Omar Mateen and how he was physically and mentally abusive to his wife and obviously later went on to commit one of the largest homophobic mass shooting. The article is based on information on criminal acts that have happened within the United States.

How is this article useful you ask, well it would be ideal for making the synoptic links within the AQA course? When looking at the ‘dark side’ of the Family and Household units and Crime and Deviance you can get the class to make links between the two areas. As this would allow them to identify that what happens within the family unit could have greater ramifications for wider society.
