Questions & Resources from the "New IB Psychology Syllabus – Are you Ready?" Webinar

Joseph Sparks

12th March 2017

Over 50 teachers attended the first in a new series of tutor2u IB webinars. The first webinar provided an overview of the new specification, including what's changed and what the new exams will look like. On this page, you will find the webinar resource bundle and questions (with answers) that were raised during the live webinar.

This webinar resource bundle includes:

  • New IB Webinar PowerPoint

  • Webinar Recording (MP4)

  • BLOA, CLOA, SLOA A3 Classroom Posters (PDF)

  • Paper 1-Style Sample Questions

  • Paper 3-Style Stimulus Material

Information: Where to find the TSM and the Sample Papers:

Go to the OCC and log in and then click (in the Psychology section) on Psychology subject website (first assessment 2019). This link takes you to the guide, teacher support material, specimen papers and assess student work. Be careful, the TSM actually on the OCC, is from May 2011 (the old curriculum), so follow the link.

QUESTIONS FROM THE WORKSHOP

1. How many DVs? Apologies for the misleading slide: the IV may be manipulated more than once, but there should only be one DV. I am assuming this, despite the slightly ambiguous wording in the guide referring to “altering the numbers of measurements taken”. All of the student samples on the IB site seem to only have one DV, and I am sure it is the safest option.

2. Can an SAQ now turn into an ERQ?

Yes, there is no material now that is “reserved” as an SAQ. Students should learn how to use material to answer essay questions. While most essay questions will be asked at topic level, rather than directed at one specific piece of content, the students will need to know the content to answer the question.

3. Will there no longer be learning outcomes, which became the questions on the exam?

No, though with “backwards planning” you will be developing your own, from the topics (units) and content.

4. For Paper 1, could the ERQ for SL and HL be different?

Yes, SL and HL have a different exam paper. While the SAQs might be the same for both SL and HL students. HL students might have 1, 2 or 3 questions from the AHL material.

5. Could a student use HL material if they are SL?

Yes they could, however, as always it would depend on how they use that material. As always, they need to ensure that they are answering the question.

6. Would you teach SL and HL all of the same material for RM (as SL need to know it for the ERQ) and then just give additional exam skills focus for Paper 3 rather than additional content?

It would depend on timing, and how much time you have for SL. It would certainly be useful for them. However, I think, given that the Paper 3 questions are quite focused, HL may need some more content directed particularly at these.

7. Does anyone know the ETA for sample papers?

These are already available by following the link to the guide on the OCC.
