Anti-clericalism

Opposition to religious authority. Anti-clericalism was widespread on the left-wing of Spanish politics in the early twentieth century. The Catholic Church was seen as a guardian of the interests of the monarchy and wealthy elites as well as a barrier to democratic reform. Anti-clerical reforms were enshrined into the December 1931 Constitution in order to limit the power of the Catholic Church.
