What is the Oldest City in the World?

This Guardian article discusses which is the world's oldest city. Several cities claim to hold that title, including Aleppo in Syria which you're sure to have seen on the news being devastated in the current Syrian conflict.

The article is a good way to start exploring the history of urbanisation in the ancient world and the requirements for the earliest permanent settlements.
