Post-Brexit Britain to pay farmers to protect the environment
9th July 2019
Proposals are in place to pay farmers who enhance and protect their local environment.
Farmers in Wales would work with an advisor to develop their own individual plan that will best benefit their local environment. The money for the project will come from the "Sustainable farming scheme" but there are concerns as to how much money will be available for the scheme and that the plans may not manifest into an actual scheme. Currently Welsh farmers are subsidised by up to 80% by the EU so there will be a shortfall in their income when the UK leaves the EU and this is hoped to be a way to ensure the farmers don't struggle. Farmers have until October to respond to the plan.
