Elephants die due to drought
22nd October 2019
55 elephants have been discovered dead close to watering holes they were trying to reach. This latest incident has occurred as a result of the drought that is currently affecting Zimbabwe.
The elephants in Hwange national park are dying due to starvation and this is as a result of overcrowding. The park is capable of holding 15000 elephants but there are more than 50000 meaning that food supplies are low. This has led to elephants travelling beyond their normal feeding grounds and destroying large amounts of vegetation in the search for enough food.
Zimbabwe has been suffering from this drought for several months with 1/3 of the population relying on food aid and 2 million at risk of starvation. The situation is dire with both humans and wildlife now at risk.
