Draining the Life Out of the River Tagus
14th August 2017
A fascinating, but disturbing article here in the Guardian describing the reasons for concern over the future of the Tagus River.
The problems facing the Tagus River are blamed on a combination of "climate change, water transfer and the waste Madrid produces".
The Tagus River fulfils several crucial roles, including providing the water supply to 6 million citizens of Madrid and providing the water to cool nuclear reactors further downstream.
The article goes on to explain how Spain may be mis-managing its use of water in general, with rising agricultural demand for water resulting in the over-exploitation of both ground and surface water.
