This short application context video for Economics exams looks at the countries in the world in 2020 having the lowest per capita incomes.
In 2020 because of the shock effects of the pandemic, GDP per capita for many of the world’s poorest countries (measured in US dollars and not PPP adjusted) fell below $1,000.
It was a year when progress in reducing extreme poverty was halted and, in many cases, reversed. “Ninety-percent of countries posted a decline in real per capita GDP in 2020, more than any other year since 1900 -- including two world wars and the economic depression of the 1930s.” (World Bank Poverty Blog, April 2022)
