One of the most common traps businesses fall into is assuming that simply throwing more resources at a problem will result in a proportional increase in output. In reality, the fundamental constraints of the "short run" mean that expanding production quickly usually comes with a steep price tag.

What Actually is the "Short Run"?

In economics, the short run isn't measured in days, months, or years. It’s defined by flexibility.

It is any period where a firm operates with at least one fixed factor of production. Usually, this is capital—the size of a factory, the number of specialized machines, or the physical footprint of a storefront.

Because capital is locked in, a business can only increase its total output by adding variable factors, such as hourly labour, electricity, or raw materials.

The Culprit: Diminishing Marginal Returns

This constraint introduces one of the most powerful concepts in microeconomics: the Law of Diminishing Marginal Returns. As a firm continuously adds variable factors (like workers) to a fixed factor (like workspace), the extra output generated by each successive worker will eventually start to fall.

A Real-World Application: The Viral Bakery

Imagine an independent high-street artisan bakery. Their fixed capital consists of three commercial ovens, two large industrial mixers, and a specific amount of kitchen floor space.

Suppose a prominent food vlogger posts a glowing review of their sourdough, and it goes viral overnight. Demand spikes by 300%. Because they are operating in the short run, the owners cannot instantly build a kitchen extension or install five new ovens. To meet demand, they immediately hire extra bakers and extend their shifts.

  • The initial boost: The first new hire helps immensely through specialization. One person preps and kneads the dough, while the other exclusively manages the ovens. The marginal product of labor is high.
  • The short-run squeeze: Desperate to make more bread, they hire a third, fourth, and fifth baker. Now, the kitchen is crowded. Workers bump into each other, wait in line to use the mixers, and oven space becomes a severe bottleneck. The extra daily output (marginal product) provided by the fifth baker is drastically lower than that of the first.

The Impact on Costs

Because the marginal product of those extra workers is falling, the cost of producing each additional loaf of bread begins to surge. Marginal Cost (MC) rises sharply. Once the rising Marginal Cost pulls above the Average Total Cost (ATC), the overall average cost per unit begins to climb. This dynamic is exactly what creates the classic U-shaped short-run average cost curve we analyze in the classroom.

Firms are always operating in the short run, battling these physical constraints daily. Understanding this mechanism is crucial for evaluating why sudden spikes in demand often lead to temporary price hikes, overtime pay crunches, or supply bottlenecks before long-run capacity investments can finally be made.
