Environmental economics - Six problems aviation must fix to hit net zero

7th September 2021
Here is a brilliant piece in the Observer looking at the challenges facing aviation as it looks to hit net zero.
Jocelyn Timperley looks at six areas of concern: fuel, non CO2 emissions, frequent flyers, policy towards aviation, the growth of a new middle class across the world and supersonic travel.
I suspect that the industry hopes that technology will resolve most, if not all of these problems, and the evidence would suggest that it will. But will it do so quickly enough? And if not, will government intervention help?
My overview of six of the major issues wrt aviation and the climate, and how we could start to address them.

The aviation problem basically cannot be solved - and that is a difficult truth that few are prepared to acknowledge. There simply isn't a sustainable fuel option with a high enough energy density. The only option is do radically less flying https://t.co/TDnhczA99B
