The Riverford case study explores sustainability through the Triple Bottom Line, employee ownership, environmental action, social responsibility, long-term business success and the challenges of sustainable operations.

Students examine how Riverford applies sustainability across people, planet and profit. They define sustainability, identify examples of environmental and social action, and explain why the Triple Bottom Line gives a broader measure of success than profit alone. The final task considers difficulties businesses may face when becoming more sustainable, such as higher costs, lower short-term profit, supply-chain limitations and operational change. The worksheet develops understanding of sustainability, stakeholder value, employee ownership and long-term business decision-making.
