Why is Birmingham so pleased to be chosen as host of the 2022 Commonwealth Games?

Because of the massive boost it can bring for local businesses, and over a long term way beyond the games themselves. For example, it is reckoned that the city of London benefited from more than £107m worth of extra business this summer when they hosted the 2017 World and Para-athletics Championships at the 2012 London Olympics facilities.

In the short run, local construction and sports related businesses can benefit from preparations for the games, and in the long run not only will areas of the city gain from new development, but also from the ongoing use of the facilities that will be provided, including new transport and infrastructure links. Those will also be helpful to any new business that chooses to locate in the area, and draw in new investment.

No wonder that Birmingham is celebrating its Commonwealth Games win.
