A Great Guide to the Gig Economy
14th February 2017
I wouldn't be surprised if the so-called "gig economy" features as a context in the A Level Business exams this summer. So this accessible, example-packed guide to the gig economy from the BBC is well worth a read by students.
Of course many students will soon be part of the gig economy, if they are not already so! From Deliveroo cyclists to temporary workers on flexible, zero-hours contracts, it is estimated there are over 5 million people in the UK alone with this kind of work.
Business students are not required to make a political or value judgement about the rights of people working in the gig economy.
However is important to have considered some of the merits and downsides from the perspective of both the workers and the businesses they serve.
Note - I've not used the word "employee". Perhaps I should!
