There are more than 700 monuments to the Confederacy across the US and in many cities they are starting to take them down.

Civil rights groups have long campaigned to have such monuments removed, although recent polls suggest a majority of Americans want them to remain.

This Channel 4 video explains the historical context to the recent unrest surrounding the removal of confederate statues.
