Climate Change Committee advises UK government to insulate homes

In order to reduce energy use, the CCC has advised the Government that its focus should be on insulation. Despite 40% of the UK's energy supply now coming from renewable sources, in order to meet net zero emission targets by 2050, improved energy saving strategies should be implemented.

Current legislation for new homes is not up to standard, with house builders using ineffective insulation. There are concerns that many homes will need retrofitting in the future to meet energy-saving standards.

The report has outlined promising news in some areas, with the promotion of electric cars, growth of renewable energy supplies and the planting of trees. However, despite the UK driving down emissions faster than any other G7 country, there are concerns that unless the housing issue and farming sector are tackled, the net zero emissions target will not be met.
