Here is a timely polemic from Will Hutton arguing for a return to state ownership of the railways and pointing to the success of Network Rail and Directly Owned Railways (which runs the East Coast line) as evidence in support of the argument that "networks of key public services such as rail are natural monopolies; ownership in other countries respects that truth, and Britain's attempt to escape it has been a costly debacle.'
