Monopsony power: News publishers fight tech giants for better deals

Graham Watson

24th August 2020

A fascinating story from the digital economy, which highlights the market power of two of the Big Four.

A number of the world's leading publishers are pressing the tech giants for a greater share of the revenues that their content generates online via AppStore, for example.

Clearly, Google and Apple have considerable monopsony power in the market for content: every time you try to access the news on your phone, you are invariably accessing content via these platforms. I don't think they'll be willing to surrender this position.
