This revision short looks at some of the Micro & Macro Effects of a Growing EV Market in the UK

Microeconomic Effects

⚡ Rising Demand (Shifting Preferences): Demand for EVs is rising as consumer awareness and climate concerns grow. In 2023, battery EVs made up 16% of new UK car registrations, up from just 1% in 2018—showing a clear rightward shift in demand.

🌍 Externalities & Market Failure: EVs help reduce negative externalities like pollution. Since cars account for 52% of UK transport emissions, EV adoption improves allocative efficiency by addressing this market failure.

🏭 Increased Competition: New firms like BYD entering the UK market increase contestability and pressure traditional manufacturers to invest in EVs—encouraging productive efficiency and lower prices over time.

Macroeconomic Effects

📈 Boost to Aggregate Demand (AD): EV growth encourages investment in charging networks and battery tech, and consumer spending on new vehicles. This adds to AD, supporting GDP growth.

🏗️ Structural Change: The shift away from petrol/diesel cars reallocates resources to clean tech sectors, promoting long-run growth and increasing LRAS through higher productivity.

🌿 Progress Toward Net Zero: With transport making up 26% of UK emissions, a shift to EVs is vital for meeting the 2050 net-zero target, reducing long-term environmental damage and supporting sustainable growth.
