Mega Deal in Sports Streaming - BT Sport and Eurosport UK complete a joint venture

1st September 2022

Here is a cracking applied example to add to Year 13 Business Economics class notes.

Warner Bros. Discovery and BT Group have completed the 50:50 joint venture that combines BT Sport and Eurosport UK. The joint-venture was given the go-ahead by the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in July 2022. They found that the joint venture bringing BT Sport and Eurosport UK together would not lead to a substantial lessening of competition. Eurosport is owned by Discovery.

The new 50-50 joint venture will hold the rights to some of the Uefa Champions League and Premier League soccer, the Olympic Games, and Eurosport staples like winter sports world cups, cycling grand tours, and tennis Grand Slams.

The brand names will operate separately for the time being before coming together with a new brand name yet to be determined.
