What happens to UK spending in the run-up to Christmas?

Using the chart ‘How does our spending change at Christmas?’ at the Bank of England, answer these calculation questions:

  1. Calculate the percentage point difference between the change in spending on ‘books, newspapers & periodicals’ and the change in spending on ‘floor coverings’ in 2024
  2. Create a table of indexed data for 2024 where 2023 is the base year for ‘computers and phones’, ‘beverages & tobacco’ and ‘vehicle fuel’.
