Business Growth: Spotify acquires Gimlet Media

An interesting merger story that highlights the fast-moving nature of the tech sector: Spotify has bought Gimlet Media, behind a string of popular podcasts including Reply All, and podcast publishing platform Anchor.

Further, they have openly declared an interest in future podcast-related acquisitions.

In the soft drinks industry they used to talk about the 'share of the throat'; with conglomerate merger activity like this, it seems that Spotify are trying to claim an ever larger 'share of the ear'. It will be interesting to see if they are able to wring significant economies of scale from such deals.
