The government are introducing new laws which state that all mobile phones will be banned in all schools. As it stands, some schools have banned mobile phones already but the Government are now supporting with a clear legal requirement that all schools must adhere to. Some schools had followed the ‘not seen, not heard’ rule where phones need to be off and in students’ bags but it is now widely agreed in Parliament that this is not enough to protect children.

Phones have been a challenge in schools for years where students are using their phones in class which distracts from learning. Additionally, at breaks and lunchtimes, students can access their phones and any difficulties like bullying via social media can continue throughout the school day and beyond. Removing phones from school can work to reduce these issues and increase concentration in class.

Ministers must now ensure that all schools have the necessary funding and infrastructure to adhere to this new law. Some schools provide students with magnetic pouches to lock their phones into at the beginning of the day. The phone can remain in the student’s possession, but they cannot access it until the magnet automatically unlocks at the end of the day. In an emergency, students can access a phone via school offices or have their pouch manually unlocked.
