The UK government has announced a ban on social media use for under-16s, which is expected to take effect in spring 2027. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the measure is intended to make children safer, happier and better protected online.

The ban will apply to major platforms including TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and X. It will cover services focused on social interaction and user-generated content, though messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Signal will not be included. To enforce the rules, platforms will be required to use age-verification technology, such as facial age estimation or ID checks. Ofcom has been asked to identify the most effective methods.

The proposal has received support from many parents and campaigners, particularly families affected by online harms, cyberbullying and harmful content. However, some teenagers argue the ban could reduce their ability to communicate and express themselves. Social media companies have also warned that restrictions may push young people towards less regulated platforms. The policy follows a similar ban introduced in Australia, where enforcement has proved challenging.
