A Finnish study found that greater screen time from childhood to adolescence was associated with better cognitive processing in the teenage years, challenging the idea that all screen use is harmful. Researchers suggest that the type of screen activity may be more important than the total amount of time spent on screens. Activities involving problem-solving, creativity, learning and active thinking may potentially support cognitive development.

The relationship between physical activity and cognition was more complex. For girls, more light physical activity was associated with better working memory, while for boys, participation in guided physical activity was linked to improved working memory. Interestingly, lower levels of unsupervised exercise were associated with better cognitive processing.

The study followed 260 young people over eight years, with an average age of 15.8 at the final assessment. Physical activity and sedentary behaviour were measured using questionnaires and monitoring devices, while cognition was assessed through tests of learning, attention and working memory.

Importantly, the research shows correlations rather than cause and effect. Therefore, researchers cannot conclude that screen time directly improves cognitive performance. Further intervention studies are needed to investigate causal relationships and differences between boys and girls.
