The Department for Education has published the final subject content for the new Level 3 V Level in Digital Systems & Data, due to be taught for the first time from September 2027.

ABOUT THE V LEVEL IN DIGITAL SYSTEMS AND DATA

The qualification is designed to give students a broad understanding of digital systems, data and digital solution design, while developing practical problem-solving skills that can be applied in workplace contexts. It combines a common core with an important element of optionality.

The core content includes:

• Digital systems – hardware, software, networks and the ways different system components interact.
• Data and information – preparing, validating, analysing, interpreting and presenting data from different sources.
• Data quality and analysis – identifying trends, patterns, anomalies, limitations and bias, and using evidence to support conclusions.
• Cyber security – threats, vulnerabilities, security controls, secure practices and interpreting system information to identify and escalate concerns.
• Responsible data use – privacy, confidentiality, access permissions, anonymisation and the protection of sensitive information.
• Problem solving and digital solution design – including user requirements, usability, accessibility and testing.
• Artificial intelligence and automation – including the role of AI-enabled analytical systems and the importance of critically evaluating their outputs.

All students will study the core content, data analysis and cyber security. They will then complete one of two applied pathways: preparing and configuring digital systems to meet user needs, or designing and creating a digital solution.
