The Influencer Dilemma explores the benefits and risks of influencer marketing, including consumer trust, targeted reach, misinformation, hidden advertising, unrealistic imagery and reputational damage.

Students examine why businesses use social media influencers as part of the promotional mix, focusing on trust, credibility, audience reach and targeted exposure. They then analyse the risks of relying heavily on influencers, including unethical promotion, misinformation, weak sponsorship disclosure, counterfeit products, privacy concerns and damage to brand reputation. The final task asks students to explain how concerns about accuracy and unrealistic beauty standards should influence influencer selection, vetting, monitoring and alignment with business values.
